MIDWAY NEIGHBORHOOD COOPERATIVE
The Midway Neighborhood Cooperative is a cooperatively owned and run construction and neighborhood development company. Made up of Midway residents and business owners, MNC is dedicated to principles of affordability, sustainability, solidarity and participatory planning rooted in a democratic workplace. We work to build neighborhood resources for and by residents of the Midway neighborhood where we work and live.
Our work focuses on three key areas of neighborhood development:
Construction
We collaborate with professional architects, engineers, urban designers and city planners to collectively plan, design, construct, restore and maintain new and existing structures in the Midway neighborhood. We work to establish high-quality, sustainable residential housing and communal resources that meet the needs of Midway residents—physical structures that support the existence of resilient, healthy social structures.
Mentorship
Grounded in a philosophy of "learning by working," we actively encourage the involvement of non-professional residents who join projects as part of an education-based mentorship program. These mentorships allow us to hire from within the neighborhood, supporting residents through meaningful, paid work and the skills needed to materialize and maintain urban spaces.
Development
In addition to the physical work that we do, we're also dedicated to facilitating conversations within the neighborhood about its present and future. Through community gatherings, surveys, informal conversations and shared spaces, we support collective "visioning"—both practical and utopian—of the Midway neighborhood. From these conversations, we develop new activities for the cooperative.
